I've spent most of the day reading reviews on GTX 1070s after spending about 4 hours talking to Robin about his build.

@Robin
You were right, "We".

I've just pulled the trigger on a Palit GTX 1070 Gamerock Premium 8GB edition, cost

You won't be disappointed. Congrats!  :iwin:

Ps, my 970 is a reference Palit card - it's been superb.

Hope not,

Card has just arrived and it's a monster and I haven't even plugged it in yet.

I'm a UK size 10 shoe, this card is an easy 11.  :O

Dave, please don't wear it.... unless you have one for the other foot. You'd just look silly hopping around.

I was actually seriously worried for a minute that it wouldn't fit in my case, it did though, fortunately my case is rather large (Antec).

Just been running some benchmarks.

I need some more punishing games, damn thing barely broke a sweat, never broke 66 degrees in temperature, even on the unigine Heaven test which recording on Shadowplay at the same time  :D
Obviously, it's not as good as my AMD ASUS R9 270, but, I think I can live with it for now.

It is CPU limited though....  :/

Go on, tell me your Heaven score. Make me want a 1080.

I get 1,693 on the extreme preset (1600x900, 8 x AA, windowed).  67.2fps, 25.9 min, 149.2 max.

Rise of the Tomb Raider would give ya card a good run out.

2,354, extreme preset @ 1080p, 93.5fps, min 27.4, max 190.1.

Don't have Rise of the Tomb Raider, did have a go on RUST, Max settings on an extremely populated server which is due to be wiped tonight, so, as populated as it gets with building etc, really badly optimized though, some bad spikes down as low as 27fps from highs of 170 lol.

Pretty happy so far though, all things considered. :)

Awesome.

Rust is a mess. ARK is worse though, makes my PC crawl.

I'd heard the same about ARK, apparently it's much better than it used to be though.
Rust is getting a graphics overhaul soon (apparently it's being worked on now but it's only in the early stages). Main problem is it's built on Unity and started life as a browser based game.

Will be getting DayZ in the coming days and Miscreated is looking pretty promising, some of the bigger YouTube guys I follow are saying positive things about it, it's on sale too :D

Edit:
Found a GTX 1070, Rise of the Tomb Raider benchmark at 1080p, averages over 100fps with a low of 84 and high of well over 150. That was with a i7 6700 though, would be significantly worse on my i5 :(

What i5 do you have? I have the 4690K. I've read a lot of questions from owners of the same CPU who were worried about potential bottlenecks if they were to get a 1070 or 1080, and the responses were always overwhelmingly positive, ie no chance of it bottlenecking the cards... Obviously an i7 is advantageous in games that are outright CPU intensive though.

Those Rise of the Tomb Raider numbers are impressive. Can't tell you my high or average FPS in the game as I used VSYNC, but I can say for sure I had dips into the 40-50 range, in certain areas. Same drops in The Witcher 3

What resolution and refresh rate is your monitor btw? With the power you have at your disposal now you'll probably want to use DSR in many games if you haven't already, especially if you're using VSYNC.

Check all factors, hit apply... then just choose the higher resolutions in-game. I used the 4K option on my 1080p TV with less demanding games, and the results are fantastic. Yours will be better as you have more frames to spare, lol.

Screenshot taken using DSR in a demanding game... took my FPS down to 15fps. Lol.

It's the i5 6500 (lack of Intel experience showing with that purchase :D)

I've actually got many potential problems slowing my system down to be fair, the AMD replacement parts were bought on a budget because this isn't my final build, so, I made sure I could reuse the RAM, that meant buying a motherboard that supported DDR3 as opposed to DDR4 and it meant i5 over i7 and whatever was at a good price point, it was also rushed and not researched, bigger number must equal better sort of thing.
Still not a bad PC, just slightly hamstrung in benchmarks.

Checked DOOM last night, Nightmare settings, 1440p. 120+fps lol.

"Monitor" is a 49" LG 4K TV (1000hz). I can do some older games in 4K but the 1070, with my system is still pretty much just a 1440p card.

Think you're being too harsh on your own PC, ya supposed to exaggerate performance, it's the PCMR way, lol... You've got a PC that's gonna play everything for 3-4 years.  :iwin:

I keep looking at GPUs, but I'm not gaming much atm, and I'm happy with current performance. Upgrading things is just so addictive - it's the world we live in, where people upgrade phones every year and it's considered normal. I think I might be getting old, we used to be happy with stuff until it broke in my day. Lol.

There is no "PC Master Race" at Ronin.

PC, console, phone, tablet or handheld, we are all gamers united under 1 banner!

I'm surprised you'd let me get away with having a better GPU than you though Bo0td lol, Robin seems hell bent on getting one up on me at every turn haha.

I'm not saying my PC is bad though, it's obviously decent and as you say, it'll play pretty much anything at ultra/high settings at 1080p for a long time to come, but, I hold no misconceptions, it does still have some weaknesses but then again, it was built with budget in mind to last my missus for her ventures into RUST and to tie me over until my proper build at the end of the year.
